Description

In the final semester of my illustration studies, I had the opportunity to illustrate an unpublished children’s story titled “Naming the Baby” by author Sheryl McFarlane.The story follows Simon, a soon-to-be big brother, as he watches the grown-ups around him argue over what to name the baby — while no one seems to listen to what Simon has to say. It’s a warm, humorous reflection on family, individuality, and the quiet wisdom of children.

I was drawn to this story’s gentle tone and relatable characters. My visual approach was to balance playful expression with emotional sincerity. I used soft shapes and a calm color palette to reflect Simon’s perspective and highlight the chaos (and love) of a growing family.
